Residency on the Island
Occasionally, properties for shorthold tenancy do come up as available. Rental costs are realistically comparative with the mainland, according to the size and location of the unfurnished property.
In seeking tenants for the island we are principally interested in people who can reside on the island for a minimum of seven to eight months (not consecutive) across the course of a year and who are also hopefully able to voluntarily contribute in some way to the care of the island infrastructure, facilities and amenities so that it is attractive and safe for visitors and residents alike.
Living on an island away from mainland facilities and support mechanisms, when added to the frequent difficulties in travel due to weather, certainly does present a challenge for anyone wishing to live here on a permanent or part-time basis. Day visitors only see the island and the boat journey in the best of weather and that is frequently not the case for residents, especially out of the summer season! However, being resident on the island the year round does bring its own unique reward, especially if you yearn for tranquillity and to distance yourself from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. (For anyone considering applying for a property for use as a second-home, be aware that council tax in that regard may well be subject to a 300% increase from April 2023).
As Caldey Island has an ongoing wildlife conservation programme in being, such as the encouragement and protection of our ever-growing red squirrel colony, predatory pets such as cats are not permitted.
If you wish to express an interest in the event a property becomes available, please write to the below, including your full personal details and current address, a CV and some information as to what you feel you could bring to the island :-
