Nicola Cleevely BA (Hons), MA, QTS, NPQH, FHEA

I am an experienced and highly qualified educator with a career spanning secondary education, teacher development, and healthcare service management. As a former Deputy Headteacher, I held strategic leadership responsibility for whole-school safeguarding, ensuring that policies, procedures, and organisational culture consistently prioritised the welfare and protection of all students. In my role as Designated Senior Person for Child Protection, I managed complex safeguarding cases, worked closely with external agencies within multi-agency frameworks, and provided clear guidance and support to staff, fostering a vigilant and safeguarding-focused environment.

Alongside my leadership experience, I have worked as a lecturer in progression and development, supporting teachers at various stages of their careers to strengthen practice and build leadership capacity. I am safer recruitment trained and have implemented robust recruitment and vetting processes, ensuring safe and compliant practices across organisations.

I am keen to contribute to the Caldey Island Safeguarding Committee as I am deeply committed to promoting the safety and well-being of children, young people, and vulnerable adults in all settings. I recognise the unique nature of the island community and the importance of safeguarding arrangements that are both rigorous and contextually appropriate. I am motivated by the opportunity to apply my experience to help ensure that safeguarding practices are effective, responsive, and consistently upheld.

Caldey Abbey
Local Authority Engagement Framework

Caldey Abbey recognises the value of a productive and positive relationship with the local authority and acknowledges the finite resource available. In this context the following engagement framework is put forward for the next two years.

Caldey Abbey works in partnership with Pembrokeshire Local Authority and the Mid and West Wales Safeguarding Board to keep its visitors, residents and employees safe. This partnership approach includes standard channels such as ensuring that the Abbey conforms to the Wales Safeguarding Procedures 2019.

In addition, and in the context of part 7 of the Social Services and Well-Being (Wales) Act 2014, in order to assist the Abbey in their safeguarding improvement journey the Abbey has agreed to work together with the Pembrokeshire Local Authority and The Regional Safeguarding Board so that they may exercise their safeguarding responsibilities by:

  • Attending a quarterly update meeting/call with the Local Authority safeguarding manager and LADO and the Caldey safeguarding lead and trustee to share any updates and/or concerns on open cases and progress on the Safeguarding Improvement Plan

  • Share any concerns raised by schools or other groups

  • LADO visiting the island annually

  • Receiving the agendas, papers and minutes of the Caldey Safeguarding Sub-Committee with an open invitation to comment on these

  • Receiving any audit and review outcomes

  • Reviewing/commenting on any new, or significantly amended, safeguarding-related policy in draft

  • Including the Abbey community (lay and monastic) in any opportunities for safeguarding training

  • Reviewing with the Abbey the success of this framework agreement after two years
